Another Bullet in the Old Gray Lady’s Ass

From yesterday’s “Best of the Web,” Taranto opens with this:

Some readers thought we were too generous to Kate Zernike of the New York Times last January. Zernike had come under attack for a story titled “Bloodshed Puts New Focus on Vitriol in Politics,” which carried her byline (along with that of colleague Carl Hulse), and which appeared the day after the attempted assassination of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Tucson, Ariz.

The story deserved all the criticism it got, including from the Times’s own ombudsman. It was part of a malignant media effort, led by the Times editorial page, to capitalize on the crime in an attempt to discredit conservative media figures, Tea Party sympathizers and other critics of President Obama.

But we thought Zernike was getting a bum rap. We had just reviewed her book, “Boiling Mad: Inside Tea Party America,” for Commentary, and we found it to be “a largely fair and measured account of the populist rebellion against Barack Obama’s aggressively liberal presidency.” Since Zernike is a fair and honest reporter, we argued: “If yellow journalism appears under her byline in the Times, it is the fault of her editors and the paper’s corrupt culture.”

This may be a case in which the proof of the pudding is in the tweeting. Last night Jim Roberts, the Times’s assistant managing editor, used his verified Twitter account to send this to his followers: “RT @thinkprogress: Five reasons why #OccupyWallStreet embodies the values of the REAL Boston Tea Party.”

As Taranto points out, this is not from some abject, reprobate, freshly spat out Columbia Journo grad, but an assistant managing editor; someone who, in most worlds would, one hopes, have at least a passing-glance relationship with institutional credibility. He’s not Krugman, MoDo, or the Times’ editorial board; he’s one of the people who is charged with cleaning up reporters’ copy so that it is “fit to print.” His basic charge, in such a position, is to keep the story straight.

Oh, who am I kidding? We’re talking about The Old Gray Lady. She tossed that idea aside too many years ago.

The link Roberts decided was so interesting that he needed to share it with his 22 thousand followers goes to notorious asshole Lee Fang’s laughably credulous explanation why Occupy Wall Street the Stupid Fucking Hippies slouching about in Zuccotti Park should be considered the real, modern day inheritors of the Boston Tea Party’s aspiration. Fang, who besides being a notorious asshole, is also documented to be a complete shit-for-brains, ticks off five talking points that attempt to show that the original Tea Party was not a response to the English Crown’s tyranny, but a rebuke to the evil corporatists known as the East India Trading Company….

Really, that’s what this notorious asshole Lee Fang used to try selling his nonsensical bullshit; the notion that East India wasn’t the Crown’s wholly owned subsidiary never crosses his young, feeble, historically addled mind.

The idea that a managing editor at “the newspaper of record” would consider such a pedantic pissant as the notorious asshole Lee Fang’s screed noteworthy enough to share it with his thousands of followers groupies shows, at least to me, just how far folks like Jim Roberts, and his employer have fallen, in pursuit of promoting their ideology while denigrating any who disagree.
