Air America Idiot Update

via In New York, Air America may be on the move from WWRL:

Air America’s deal with WWRL expires soon and Air America CEO Bennett Zier says, “As our contract is winding down, we are in negotiations with WWRL about extending the agreement.”

Zier declined further comment, but reports have been circulating that the agreement may be allowed to expire, leaving Air America in search of another station.

The problem is that the options are limited, particularly among stations with a strong signal. Few make significant amounts of airtime available for lease, and Air America has never had the resources to carry out its original plan of buying or leasing whole stations.

It now only leases part of the time on WWRL, which is why an Air America host like Ron Kuby, who probably has the strongest New York following of anyone on the AA staff, isn’t heard here.

Honestly, these folks runnning Air Idiot ought to just dump the notion of requiring a NYC presence to somehow ‘legitimize’ their existence. Their previous “flagship” station here, WLIB, has regularly out-performed them in the Arbitron ratings since giving them the boot… playing friggin’ Gospel music.

And if they are so bloody stupid that they couldn’t find a slot for Ron Kuby–who co-hosted a morning show with Curtis Sliwa that was well regarded, and made Kuby a bona-fide NYC radio draw–in one of the time slots they lease from WWRL (even if they had to tape-delay the show to allow for Red Ron’s law practice), then they should just toss in the towel.
