God Bless Mess

He just might be the only professional hockey jock since Eddie Giac wearing a Red Wing jersey on the Garden ice who ever made me cry. He came to town and said “I’ll win you a Cup.”

And he did. Sometimes it looked like he dragged that team, kicking and screaming and praying that Richter would keep the door closed, but he finally forced everyone in Long Island who chanted “1940” to just STFU, and absolutely bitch-slapped the Devils in the process.

For me, he’s standing right there with Thurman… he was that good.

And he was a toughie, too. Never took shit, but sweet Baby Jeebus Lord Almighty, could he ever deal it out. Sometimes, I’d see that look on his face, and I’d say to myself, “he’s gonna kill somebody,” and then he’d go into a corner and just crush someone.

I truly believe no one would know Wayne Gretsky’s name if it wasn’t for Mark Messier. That kid would have been dead without Mess.

Legends of Hockey – Induction Showcase – Mark Messier

BTW, that is a freakin’ awesome crew the puckheads are inducting this year.

It Is the Soldier
by Father Dennis Edward O’Brien, United States Marine Corps

It is the Soldier, not the reporter
Who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the Soldier, not the poet,
Who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer,
Who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.

It is the Soldier, not the lawyer,
Who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the Soldier, who salutes the flag,
Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protestor to burn the flag.

God Save the King!

Spain’s king tells Venezuela’s Chavez to shut up | Reuters

Spain’s King Juan Carlos told Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on Saturday to “shut up” during closing speeches by leaders from the Latin world that brought the Ibero-American summit to an acrimonious end.

“Why don’t you shut up?” the king shouted at Chavez, pointing a finger at the president when he tried to interrupt a speech by Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero.

Zapatero was in the middle of a speech at the summit of mostly leftist leaders from Latin America, Portugal, Spain and Andorra, and was criticizing Chavez for calling former Spanish Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar a fascist.

A fascist regime!
