“The Forgotten Borough,” Episode One Point Two Five Four Gagillion

New York Daily News – S.I., Manhattan terminals still ferry empty of shops

Signs at the empty Staten Island ferry terminals promise that stores and restaurants are “Coming Soon” – but don’t bet on it.

No one who really understands the machinations involved in NYC politics should be surprised about this situation, as one person quoted in the article said:

“Everything in lower Manhattan is New York, New York, and then you get to the ferry terminal – and you better have a good book and food with you,” said Edith Martinez, 61, of the Bronx, who works in Staten Island.

This sentiment, however is the one that can make the more… what, bellicose? defenders of The Rock worry, if it’s widely accepted:

When the St. George terminal opened in May 2005, Priscilla Marco, 49, of Staten Island waited for a pizzeria, bank or beauty salon to sprout, but then lost hope.

“Staten Islanders put up with a lot and the city knows it,” she said.

I’m going Trace Adkins… and camo pants….
