The Rookie Gets a Lesson

Don’t get between the Captain and the ball:

After being stepped on and barreled over, Cano was just as baffled by Jeter’s play as the 51,833 fans in attendance. “I don’t know where he came from,” the rookie second baseman said.

Uncle Joe knows:

Though Joe Torre called the catch “incredible,” he did say he wasn’t exactly shocked by it since he figured Jeter had a chance right off the bat. The manager has been conditioned to expect as much from his shortstop. “I thought he’d have it because he never misses them,” said Torre. “He’s the most remarkable player I’ve ever seen.”

Jeter said that’s the approach to take on those balls since they are the types of potential hits that pitchers hate. “When they’re hit,” Jeter said, “I pretty much go after them until someone calls me off.”

Now Cano knows.

Video of the play here. In a post-game interview Jeter was asked if he worried he had injured Cano. “No, he’s young. He’ll be alright.”

Hear that, rook? No whining!
