A Typical Staten Island Thing

I’ve seen this kid play a few times the last couple of years, and believe me, he’s as good as anybody in the city, especially considering that with the team he’s on, he’s always double and sometimes triple-teamed, and he still lights up the scoreboard almost at will. But since he’s playing out here “in the boonies” he usually never gets mentioned when the Daily News or the Post do their roundups of the best local high school b-ball players.

Now, if it was football, I wouldn’t mind an individual player not getting any respect from the newspapers, because Staten Island practically owns NYC high school football. The public school championship winner since the Eighties has either been a Staten Island school or had to go through a Staten Island school to take the title. Seven of the NY Daily News’ top ten games of 2004 involved a Staten Island team, and a couple of those games made the list just because a team from one of the other boroughs managed to pull out a “W” against a local squad.
