Someone explain what kinda strategery is going on here:
UNIONDALE, N.Y. — The New York Islanders have agreed to terms with goalie Martin Biron on a one-year deal.
Biron was 29-19-5 for the Flyers last season, with a 2.76 goals-against average, and led Philadelphia to the Eastern Conference finals against Pittsburgh.
“Adding Marty gives us three bona fide No. 1 goalies,” general manager Garth Snow said in a statement. “We learned about the importance of stability in our lineup from last year and he now allows us to have another quality starter.”
The 6-foot-3 goalie has a career 2.59 GAA in 433 NHL games with the Flyers and Buffalo.
Snow earlier this month signed former Edmonton goalie Dwayne Roloson to a two-year contract. Oft-injured No. 1 goalie Rick DiPietro is rehabbing from knee surgery.
When you add to mix the Isle’s draft picks, it seems pretty weird. Having “three Number Ones” is asking for problems. Also, that 31st pick? Six foot five (or seven) and weighing a mere 192lbs. sound like a willow that will break in the wind. Ken Dryden was tall, but at least he weighed in at 2 hundred+[ed note: I think he was WAY heavier then what the Habs have listed].
But I can’t see the logic in loading up on goalies, especially the “three Number Ones” concept. Is this a kinda tacit admission that giving the seemingly brittle DiPietro that asinine contract was a major mistake?
