My father was a rabid chess freak (IIRC, the Fischer-Spassky craze was happening around ’72 or ’73. He had a fair amount of mildamage from his Air Force service as a cryptographer (?) in Japan and, suffice it to say, he had unusual ideas about life and how it was meant to be lived but much of it was interesting and instructive and chess really chilled his ass out. He’d have the book, AND all these other books, sometimes in foreign tongues, and if I grew exhausted and impatient of all that concentration (I was eight, after all) he’d play games with himself for HOURS.
Which I enjoyed, because that kept the focus on whatever mischief I was plotting at the same time.
I don’t love the game now, and if I wanted to psychoanalyze myself (been there, done that, bought the tshirt), I’d say it was because I thought I had everything figured out twenty-five minutes ago, so, now can we move on to something else?
What do you call a kid so non-competitive, he just wants to play all the time whether he wins or loses the game?
It was extremely important to my father to show no emotion and appear completely non-reactive and self-possessed. I can do this but it’s all an act.
