ALBANY – Illegal immigrants will be able to obtain driver’s licenses under a controversial new policy to be announced today by Gov. Spitzer, The Post has learned.
Under the change, the Department of Motor Vehicles will no longer require applicants provide Social Security numbers or proof that they are eligible for Social Security cards, a source said.
Instead, the DMV will accept valid foreign passports, previous state driver’s licenses and other verifiable proofs of ID that would be considered on a point-based system, the source said.
“The DMV does not believe it’s in the business checking a person’s legal status, it’s not the INS,” the source said.
Following 9/11, then-Gov. George Pataki in 2002 issued an executive order requiring driver’s-license applicants to show a Social Security number to prove their residency status.
As the report notes, “Steamroller” is not gonna attempt running this through the state legislature, where he knows it would never stand a chance of passing. Instead, he’s just going to issue his own executive order that will supercede Pataki’s order requiring proof that an applicant is actually a legal resident of the United States before being granted the privilege to operate a motor vehicle.
The vetting process outlined here is complete and utter bullshit: possession of a valid foreign passport would mean that anyone here with a tourist stamp could obtain a driver’s license. The other criteria could easily be obtained using faked or stolen identification issued by some entity that did not perform the due diligence that should be required before anything that “legitimizes” a person brandishing such a document is issued. Those “point system” documents most likely will consist of things like telephone, gas and electric bills; I could probably get my dog signed up a customer of Verizon, Keyspan and Con Ed without breaking a sweat (I’ve already pulled that stunt on Columbia House and various magazines over the years).
Other than at airports, a NYS issued driver’s license pretty much gives its bearer carte blanche.
When Spitzer was campaigning, he kept blathering on about “on Day One, everything will change.” He sure as shit never mentioned this.

Why? With all respect, Mrs. Penguin….Now, at all times? I am told by my sister and other acquaintances that we’re about to be hit by a crystal meth epidemic….I know little about this drug itself, but it seems to reduce those who partake of it to degenerate, animalistic savages. It seems to be a white thing, and there’s no reason to believe places like New Jersey and Staten Island would be immune from this. God Forbid, it could come to a point where you’d have to escort your wife to and from the ferry….how are you to do that with a shotgun?
And wouldn’t she want to protect herself from animals with her OWN snubnose pistol in her bag? There are few checkpoints around and they have to be letting the decent people through anyway, or we’d have heard of it, loudly, in the media…
The only reason I could see her banning guns from the house is if you had an extremely resourceful and curious kid around, if you were a mean (or looney-tune) drunk, if you were suicidal, or if she is.
Now I may be a lefty, but I’ve never understood people who are frightened of guns themselves. I’ve always believed they either come from very safe neighborhoods, or have a belief in God which precludes their participation in their own self-protection. But fireams are a reality here, and the criminals certainly have them…..all the women in my family, in-laws, etc. are extremely comfortable around firearms because they all grew up seeing them as protection. In addition, to sell your stuff is not a great idea because prices, selection, availability, etc., are not as favorable as they were five or so years ago and, sadly, any trade entails risk.
The dogs, I can see, because you were beginning to sound like “El Conquistador” when they were by your side, and they are expensive to feed.
But some of us need to re-examine our attitudes on guns. The cops have few if any resources and will to defend our safety anyway anymore, and even if they do, the laws and the courts frequently prevent justice.
Incidentally, I believe this for the European nations as well. If we do not want “big brother” and cameras on every corner, and we want habeus corpus back, we have to take some responsibility for the safety of our streets, the safety of ourselves and our loved ones, and our streets, we have to step up to the plate.

Governor Eliot Spitzer is right, and he is a hero!
Those bandit and scoundrel republicans are dividing our society with scare tactics. They are trying to make our country a hatemonger country. We welcome immigrants and their contribution to our society. The Americans who claim not to have jobs and complaining are the lazy scum of our society; we are hard working proud Americans who are not afraid to help the poor and make our society a welcoming society. Governor Eliot Spitzer is a real American whom our forefathers should be proud of. I pray to God he prevails, in which case he already did. For those of you, hateful dirt(s), go join the KKK, live in a trailer somewhere in the South in remote swaps, marry your closest, and do yourself a favor; don’t pollute our welcoming state and our country with your hate speeches. After all is it not a republican who was preying on young boy interns, and the other who took his family value straight to the rest room looking for perverts at least that was told. We are God fearing good and clean Americans, not thieves and perverts. Spitzer is right, let the poor dream as well.
Thank you, may God bless Spitzer and our country; may God give your hateful heart the scent of worship and care. And when I say worship is not worshipping the hateful rep., the overweight and ugly Congressman James Sensenbrenner, whose cholesterol level still out scores his ego and hatred. Why don’t he focus on his health and eating habits rather than scaring Americans with his inflated fear tactics, back room politics and poisons bills; he might as well go and work for groups like the K.K.K. We are a welcoming nation; we feed the poor; we pray to God; we love and respect our family, neighbors and God’s creatures. Why don’t we listen to star citizens such as the priests who devoted their lives for the good of men and God; who are telling us to be kind, why do we follow a no good liar republican politician? It simply beats logic away. Go Spitzer and alike, enough of these lies.
